Fast Fashion for Pets? It's a No for our Dogs and the Planet

We've all heard of fast fashion for humans. But have you ever stopped to think about fast fashion for pets? Well it’s a thing. And while your pup might look cute and Instagram worthy in that Halloween outfit, the planet’s paying a much bigger price.

Let’s unpack the rise of fast fashion in the pet industry, what it’s doing to our environment, and how we can make changes towards a more sustainable industry.

When Did Pets Become Style Icons?

Pet fashion is booming. The global market for pet clothing hit a whopping US$5.4 billion in 2024 and is expected to climb to US$7.2 billion by 2030 (NextMSC). In Australia, the pet apparel trend is red hot—especially with the rise of ‘petfluencers’ rocking matching outfits with their humans.

But behind the cuteness is waste and a lot of it.

What Is “Fast Fashion” in the Pet World?

Fast fashion for pets mirrors what we see in human trends—cheap, synthetic materials, mass-produced for a season or even a single photo op. Think Halloween costumes, holiday jumpers, even puffer jackets or “just because” outfits. Most are:

  • Poorly made

  • Made from synthetic materials

  • Worn once (if that)

  • Tossed in the bin after they lose their sparkle or the TikTok video has been made

Pet owners rarely consider what those clothes are made from or where they end up. Spoiler: it’s not in a cute little doggie heaven but in landfill and for an awfully long time.

Environmental Impact? Be Prepared

We already know the fashion industry contributes to 8–10% of global carbon emissions, produces 20% of global wastewater, and sends 92 million tonnes of textiles to landfill every year (UN Environment Programme). The pet industry isn’t exempt - it's just sneakier about it.

A recent Australian study published in Pacific Conservation Biology found that dogs contribute significantly to environmental harm—not just through food, but also through the accessories and gear they wear (CSIRO, 2024).

Let’s add this up:

  • Cheap collars = synthetic fibres

  • Trendy leashes = plastic coating

  • Frilly jumpers = polyester galore

These materials don’t biodegrade. They leach microplastics and toxic dyes into the soil and waterways. And if your dog has sensitive skin (like Bobbie), they’re not just wasteful—they’re irritating.

Dogs Deserve Better Than Polyester

Aside from the eco-havoc, synthetic fabrics can wreak havoc on your dog’s skin. Itchy necks, hot spots, and rashes are common side effects of that cute collar from a fast-fashion brand.

That’s why hypoallergenic, breathable, natural fibres like hemp are gaining traction. It’s durable, biodegradable, and gentle on even the most sensitive pup's skin.

What Can Pet Owners Do?

Here’s how to avoid falling into the fast-fashion for your pup trap:

1. Choose sustainable materials

Look for gear made from hemp, organic cotton, or recycled natural fabrics. They last longer, feel better, and leave a lighter paw print.

2. Skip single-use outfits

Do you really need a Christmas outfit and a New Year’s look for your cavoodle?

3. Buy less, choose well

Invest in timeless, high-quality accessories your pup can wear all year round. Not just for the ‘gram.

4. Upcycle or donate

Got gear your dog’s grown out of? Pass it on, repurpose it, or use it in DIY projects.

🌱 The Hemp Solution (Yes, We’re Biased—But for Good Reason)

We’re here for the dogs who don’t want to be itchy and scratchy and basically uncomfortable, and for the humans who don’t want to add to the ecological nightmare we've created for our planet.

Fast pet fashion is cute BUT it’s a problem. With synthetic materials piling up in landfill and hurting our pets’ skin, it’s time to rethink how we dress our dogs. Choose quality, choose sustainable, and let your pet be comfortable and cool without stomping all over the planet.
